Accident help

Had an accident? Here’s what to do.

Stay calm and get safe. This checklist covers the next ten minutes. If you’re a member, call the club and we’ll handle what comes after.

At the roadside

Right now, step by step.

  1. Get safe

Hazard lights on. If you can, move out of traffic.

  2. Anyone hurt? Call 000

Police and ambulance come first, every time.

  3. End the trip

End the trip in the app and check your passenger is OK.

  4. Swap details

Name, address, the car’s rego and the owner’s name, with everyone involved. It’s the law in Victoria, and you need the other driver’s full name and address to make a claim.

  5. Take photos

All the cars, number plates, damage, the road and any signs.

  6. Leave the dashcam alone

Don’t format or reuse the card. The club retrieves the footage for you.

  7. Don’t argue fault

Don’t admit fault or agree to pay at the scene. Stick to the facts.

  8. Call the club within 48 hours

We arrange the tow and the repair, and tell you what happens next. Claims must be lodged within 48 hours.

  9. Tell the platform

Report it to Uber, DiDi or your taxi network the way they ask.

After you call

One call, then two paths.

What happens next depends on fault and your membership terms.

We arrange the tow

Your car goes to Nationwide Collisions, our repair partner. All member repairs are done there. Repair times depend on the damage and on parts.

Other driver at fault

Their side pays for the repair

  • Nationwide Collisions assesses and repairs your car
  • The repair is billed to the other driver’s insurer or provider
  • Dashcam footage helps settle disputed fault faster
  • No excess to pay
  • A replacement vehicle once their insurer accepts liability

You were at fault

You’re still covered

  • A $1,200 excess, paid within 72 hours of lodging the claim
  • Nationwide Collisions assesses and repairs your car
  • Towing covered up to 100km from the Melbourne CBD
  • Extra excesses can apply, see the membership terms

The rules

What Victorian law says.

After any crash, drivers in Victoria must do four things.

  1. Stop straight away.
  2. Help anyone who is injured.
  3. Give your name, address, the car’s rego and the owner’s name to the other people involved, and to police if they’re there.
  4. Report the crash to the nearest police station if anyone is injured and police weren’t there, or if property was damaged and its owner wasn’t there.

FAQ

Accident questions.

More in the full FAQ.

Q.01What should I do first after an accident?

Get safe, call 000 if anyone’s hurt, then call the club. Take photos, and lodge your claim with the club within 48 hours.

Q.02What counts as a not-at-fault accident?

Generally, a crash caused by the other driver, such as being rear-ended or hit by someone running a red light. Evidence decides disputed fault, which is where dashcam footage helps.

Q.03Is Uber responsible for my car after a crash?

No. Uber’s free injury protection covers certain injuries to you on a trip, not damage to your car. Your car is covered only by the policy or membership you arranged. What Uber covers, and what it doesn’t.

Q.04Do I pay an excess if it wasn’t my fault?

No, as long as the other driver is identified and at fault. If fault is disputed, or it’s a hit-and-run, the excess is paid up front and refunded once it’s recovered from the at-fault driver.

Q.05Do I need to report the crash to police?

In Victoria you must report a crash to police if anyone is injured and police weren’t there, or if property was damaged and its owner wasn’t there.

Q.06Who repairs my car?

Nationwide Collisions, our repair partner in Coburg North. All member repairs go through them, booked by the club. About the panel shop.

Q.07How long do I have to make a claim?

Lodge it with the club within 48 hours of the accident, and pay any excess within 72 hours. Claims lodged late may not be accepted.
