The short answer

There’s no single best rideshare insurance in Australia. Drivers choose between a car insurance policy that includes rideshare use, Uber’s pay-per-kilometre policy with Vero, commercial or taxi insurance, or a drivers’ club membership such as Stallion. Not every insurer covers paid trips, and some that do cap your hours, so check before you drive.

The four options

Four ways to cover a rideshare car.

Option 1

Car insurance with rideshare use

How it works
A comprehensive policy where you declare rideshare use. Some insurers include it, some charge more, some refuse it.
Often suits
Part-time drivers who want a big-brand insurer.
Check
That rideshare is shown on your policy, any weekly hour limit, and whether a hire car is included.

Option 2

Uber’s pay-per-km policy

How it works
A comprehensive policy from Vero, bought in the Uber Driver app: a fixed monthly price for private use, plus a charge per kilometre on Uber trips.
Often suits
Uber-only drivers whose hours go up and down.
Check
It doesn’t cover driving for other apps such as DiDi.

Option 3

Commercial or taxi insurance

How it works
A policy written for vehicles used for hire, usually arranged through a broker.
Often suits
Taxi owners and operators with more than one car.
Check
The premium and excess, and whether it’s more cover than a rideshare driver needs.

Option 4

A drivers’ club membership

How it works
You join, pay monthly, and the club handles the car after an accident. Stallion is one: a membership, not an insurance policy.
Often suits
Full-time Melbourne drivers, especially on more than one app.
Check
The membership terms: what’s covered, the excess, and where repairs are done.

Before you choose

Six questions to ask any provider.

Ask us the same six. Our answers are in the next section.

  1. Does it cover paid trips? Many personal policies exclude carrying paying passengers.
  2. Where is my car fixed? And do I get a say in the repairer?
  3. Do I get a car while mine is repaired?Included, extra, or not offered?
  4. Am I paid if I can’t work?Few car policies cover lost income.
  5. What’s the excess? And is it higher for rideshare claims?
  6. Am I locked in?Monthly and annual suit different drivers.

Our answers

How Stallion answers the six questions.

Paid trips
Yes. Uber, DiDi and taxi, whichever app you’re on.
Where it’s fixed
Nationwide Collisions in Coburg North, our repair partner. All member repairs are done there, so you don’t choose the repairer.
Car while it’s repaired
A replacement vehicle when the crash isn’t your fault, once the other driver’s insurer accepts liability.
Paid if you can’t work
Loss of income cover when the crash isn’t your fault. How it works.
Excess
$1,200 when you’re at fault. Nothing when the other driver is at fault and identified. Extra excesses apply to some drivers.
Lock-in
Standard is $110 a month with no lock-in. Dashcam is $130 a month over 12 months.

The honest bit

When Stallion isn’t the right fit.

  • You drive an electric car, or a car worth more than $35,000. We can’t cover those.
  • You’re under 21.
  • You do food delivery. Membership covers rideshare and taxi work only.
  • You’re outside Melbourne. Repairs are done at our partner shop in Coburg North.
  • You want to pick your own repairer.
  • Your car finance contract asks for a comprehensive insurance policy. Stallion is a membership, so check your contract.

More in rideshare insurance explained.

Q.01Which insurance companies cover rideshare in Australia?

Suncorp, GIO and ROLLiN’ say they cover ridesharing. NRMA Insurance covers it for up to 10 hours a week. Youi quotes it as business use. Uber sells a pay-per-kilometre policy with Vero. Budget Direct says it doesn’t cover ridesharing. Checked 13 October 2026.

Q.02Does AAMI cover Uber drivers?

AAMI’s website doesn’t say yes or no. It tells drivers to check their policy documents before driving for a ridesharing service, because “depending on the specifics of your policy, you might not be covered.” Ask AAMI before your first trip.

Q.03Does Budget Direct cover Uber or DiDi?

No. Budget Direct says the car must not be used for carrying passengers for payment, including taxis and ridesharing.

Q.04Who has the cheapest rideshare insurance?

It depends on your car, your history and how much you drive, and most insurers only give prices as a quote. Stallion’s price is published: $110 or $130 a month. Compare what’s included, not only the price.

Q.05Is a drivers’ club the same as insurance?

No. Stallion is a members’ association. Your car is covered under the membership agreement, not an insurance policy. Read the membership terms before you join.
